Over the years I have made a collection of quotes about dogs that I think are worth

sharing with those that have the same opinion of dogs that I have.

                                            ...............................

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that

never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.

He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds & sores that come in

encounter with the roughness of the world.

When all other friends desert, he remains.

                                                                                   George G.Vest.

Every boy should have 2 things;

A dog, & a mother willing to let him have one.

                                                                                   Author unknown.

Beautiful.

No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as a dog does.

                                                                                  Christopher Morley.

Man is troubled by what might be called the dog wish, a strange compulsion to be as happy

and carefree as a dog.

                                                                                  James Thurber.

If it be the chief point of friendship to comply with a friends motions and inclinations,

he possesses this in an eminent degree; he lies down when I sit and walks when I walk,

which is more than many good friends can pretend to do.

                                                                                  Alexander Pope.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.

You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful & true, to the last beat of his

heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

                                                                                  Author unknown.

Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity,

Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the virtues of man without

his vices. This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery, if inscribed over human ashes,

is but a just Tribute to "Boatswain" a dog.

                                                                                 John Cam Hobhouse.

Somewhere a little dog doth wait ; It may be by some garden gate.

With eyes alert and tail attent........You know the kind of tail that's meant.............

With stores of yelps of glad delight, To bid me welcome home at night.

                                                                                 John Kendrick Bangs.

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.

                                                                                 Roger Caras.

Dog ; A kind of additional or subsidiary Diety designed to catch the overflow and surplus

of the world's worship.

                                                                                Ambrose Bierce.

The dog is a saint. He is straight forward and honest by nature.

He knows by instinct when he is not wanted ; Lies quite still for hours when his king is hard

at work. But when his king is sad and worried he creeps up and lays his head on his lap.

Don't worry, Never mind if they all abandon you, Let us go for a walk and forget all about it!

                                                                                Axel Munthe

A dog has the soul of a philosopher.

                                                                                Plato.

I would rather see the portrait of a dog that I know, than all the allegorical paintings they

can show me in the world.

                                                                                Samuel Johnson.

The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and is in fact the most precious & valuable

possession of mankind.

                                                                                 Theodorus Gaza.

You think dogs will not be in heaven ?

I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.

                                                                                 Robert Louis Stevenson.

The following is a story that us dog people can relate to.

If you are not a "dog person" maybe this will help you understand me.

If you are a "dog person" you will understand and appreciate the following.

....................................................................................................................................

                                                   "Just a dog"

From time to time, people tell me to "lighten up its just a dog".

Or that's a lot of money for "just a dog"

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent or

the costs involved for "just a dog"

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog"

Many hours have passed & my only company was "just a dog"

but I did not once feel slighted or lonely.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog"

and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort & reason to

overcome the day.

If you, too ,think it's "just a dog" then you will probably understand phrases like "just a friend"

"just a sunrise" or "just a promise"

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion & patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog "I will rise early, take long walks & look longingly to the future.

So for me & folks like me, its not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes & dreams

of the future, the fond memories of the past,& the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what is good in me & diverts my thoughts away from myself & the

worries of the day.

I hope that someday "they" can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives

me humanity & keeps me from being "just a man".

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog" just smile, because "they" just don't

understand.
