This is the sign that  "WELCOMES"  you to   "KARANA KELPIE STUD".

Kay & I would like to welcome you to our web site & hope that you enjoy learning about our

great dogs,we are very proud of the quality we have developed in our dogs over the last 21

years,This is evidenced in the depth of the number of good dogs we compete with all with our

 own Stud Prefix.

Kevin & Karana Duke National Kelpie Utility Champion 2007

Our aim is to breed top quality utility type Kelpies with an athletic build, good stamina & a

friendly easy handling temperament that will work well in the yard & shed & have a good long

wide cast in the paddock.

We believe we are one of a few breeders breeding dogs with a good cast as well as having a

positive attitude in the yards.

Digger Winning the National Kelpie Championship at Toolang in Victoria in 2006 his 3rd win

a feat no other dog has equaled ,He is 11years & 9 months at the time Proving his Endurance.

More about Karana Digger in our Achievements section.

Until recently we ran a 2000 head merino sheep farm with 50 beef cattle as well as growing

250 acres of wheat in the central west of New South Wales Australia.

In 2005 we sold the better wheat farming country to semi retire to concentrate on the Kelpie

Dog Stud.

I have been working in the Forbes Stock Selling Yards for a number of years with my

dogs as a stockman which I will continue to do.

We still have 900 acres of some grazing & some hill country running 250 sheep for dog training

purposes, this gives the dogs a good variety of work as in the hill country the dogs have to work

out of sight & rely on their natural instincts without any instructions from me to bring the

sheep out to me,they then take the sheep home in a drive situation to the yards where they

then do the yard & shed work.

The work in the sale yards involves long hours of hard work by the dogs

handling many thousands of sheep some in small mobs & some mobs as big as 2000 head.

Duke Hard at Work with no time to spare.A total yarding of 30,000 mostly prime lambs this day

Which have to be prepared & penned by 11 am for sale & once sold they then have to be

counted again & delivered to their individual buyers holding pens.

Dogs returning to work after having a quick dip & a drink.

Although we trial our dogs for sport as well as to prove their ability against other dogs, they

must firstly be tough work dogs, A dog must work well in both the paddock & yard to be

considered a good dog by me.

I believe that if you do not compete you cannot compare your dogs ability with others & we like

to do this to know we are breeding the best dog for all situations.

Training days arranged here at home with groups or one on one by appointment.

As well as dog training we cover good feeding practices, health, safety at work & dog housing.

Kevin & Catrinus with some of the Netherlands Clinic group 2006

KARANA SEIKO.

Even though we always had dogs to get our stock work done,it really all started with SEIKO.

Without Seiko this Stud would not be what it is today!

Even though I had worked with dogs since I was 15 years old (these were cross bred farm dogs)

When Seiko came along he showed me how a quality dog can handle sheep or cattle in a calm

strong way with ease without upsetting the stock or causing any stress. He taught me a lot.

Which is what I use as a selection criteria today when selecting a pup to keep in the Stud.

He was a very calm self confident dog, very strong & highly intelligent. He was my mate.

Seiko started his trialing career at age 10 months & showed great courage and cover for what

was to be his work style for the rest of his life,

Seiko recorded his first win at Pinnaroo in South Australia 1991 at the Australian Yard Dog

Championships when he Won the Novice & the Improvers

During his career Seiko won a total of 30 Open Yard Trials,7 Area Yard Dog Championships as

well as Winning the New South Wales Yard Dog Championship at Bathurst in 1994.

He also demonstrated his versatility by winning a Novice 3 sheep Trial at Nyngan in 1994

He also Won the National Kelpie Utility Championship in Lucindale South Australia in 1996

& came second in the same event in 1997.Below

Seiko when he came 2nd at Pyengana in the National Kelpie Utility Championship at Tasmania

He Won the Coveted Caringal Utility Trial in 1998 which was held in a 500 acre paddock so if

you lost control of your sheep you lost them.He came second on three other occasions.

Seiko was New South Wales Yard Dog of the year for 3 years running:1993,1994,1995.

And came second in the Australian Yard Dog Championship on 2 occasions.

His most memorable effort was when he came equal first in the Australian Yard Dog

Championship with his own Brother Karana Stubbie at Toowoomba in 2001 & came 2nd after a

runoff at the age of 12 years,we retired him after that great effort as we felt it was a fitting

way for a Great Champion to end his Trialing career.

He will always be remembered & looked up to for the way he worked at home & at Trials.

He was an outstanding ,Intelligent dog at home & a great Mate.

Karana Seiko:22015:Sadly passed away on 11/11/2003 with a growth in his chest.

He has left a legacy behind with his breeding being carried through the Stud.
